The Importance of Flexibility Training

Health and wellness professional Tim Penix works as a health coach with the Department of Veterans Affairs, a position in which he helps patients enjoy improved quality of life. Among Tim Penix’s areas of expertise is exercise and fitness, including flexibility training.

Improving flexibility offers many advantages. The greater range of motion flexibility training provides makes it easier and more enjoyable to participate in a wide range of physical activities. Improved flexibility also makes a person less likely to get hurt while engaging in those activities, and can reduce the degree to which a person feels sore after exercising. Additional benefits include feeling more relaxed and having better posture.

Some people might feel discouraged because they are not as flexible as others. There are a number of reasons why this might be the case. For instance, a person’s flexibility tends to decrease as he or she gets older. A person’s gender, body type, and exercise habits also play a role. However, even if a person is relatively inflexible, flexibility training as a part of a regular exercise plan can make a big difference. This might include targeted stretching before and after exercise. Forms of exercise that emphasize stretching, such as yoga, is another approach. Provided a person avoids stretching cold muscles and listens to the limits of his or her body, stretching can be a rewarding and key part of an active lifestyle.
